Straight off the heels of the Cherry Blossom Festival, what signature spring event brings speed, STEM and thousands of spectators to Macon’s Magnolia Street?

That would be Macon’s other event in full bloom: The Magnolia Soapbox Derby. The annual race celebrated its ninth anniversary on April 8, where around 5,000 people gathered to watch 52 competitors vie for the fastest and most creative soapbox cars in four separate categories. The event that went from a neighborhood block party has now earned a regional reputation for soapbox racing – and creating a strong sense of place and pride for Macon residents and racers, alike.

Teach to Inspire Project Provides Creative Resources Through Grant Awards

(Macon, Ga.) The Peyton Anderson Foundation announces the Teach to Inspire Project, an innovative, teacher-based grant program providing creative resources for Bibb County public schools. Through the Teach to Inspire project (TIP), the Foundation seeks to inspire education in Macon-Bibb by contributing additional monies to support extraordinary efforts. Up to $500,000 in funding is available for teachers’ best ideas for their classrooms, with grants awards ranging from $250-$10,000. Read More

Financial Literacy Opportunity Brings Greater Prosperity to Macon-Bibb

HOPE Inside Macon-Bibb is living up to its name by giving low-income residents more than just hope: it’s providing financial literacy services that change lives. The nonprofit is a local initiative of HOPE International that operates out of the Buck Melton Community Center. It provides free credit and money management workshops as well as one-on-one coaching sessions. HOPE Inside Macon-Bibb County began serving residents last February when dozens of people registered for its inaugural workshops.
