When it comes to the pillar of Place, oftentimes it’s the community beautification efforts that are the first part of creating that sense of place noticed. In OneMacon’s approach to community and economic development, the strategic recommendation of beautifying our most visible places – our corridors, neighborhoods and activity centers – is at the top of the list.
Since 2008, Historic Macon has focused our revitalization efforts in Beall’s Hill. To date, we’ve completed over 38 historic rehabilitations and new construction projects in Beall’s Hill, and invested nearly $6 million into the neighborhood. After executing our approach to neighborhood revitalization – one neighborhood at a time, street by street, block by block, and house by house – for over 30 years, we at Historic Macon Foundation recognized our revitalization work in Beall’s Hill made a significant economic impact in the community.
Tourism is a powerful jobs and economic development generator in Macon. The direct economic impact of Macon’s successful tourism efforts increases every year. According to the U.S. Travel Association, in 2015, Macon-Bibb County tourism pumped $347 million in direct tourist spending into the local economy, generated over 3,400 jobs, produced $9.71 million in local tax revenue and created $14.79 million in state tax revenue. Bibb County is ranked 10th out of 159 Georgia counties for 2014 tourism expenditures and as a result of tourism efforts, each Bibb County household received $350.34 in tax relief.
Imagine a Macon where bikes lessen the burden of parking. Pedestrians are put first. Cyclists pedal with confidence in their own, designated lanes. Streets were complete for everyone. Bikes become a culture over cars. And Downtown Macon is the spoke of that revolution.
Downtown Macon’s historic buildings’ stock is heralded by preservationists, coveted across the country and has defined the city’s character and charm for more than a century.
